Electric Vehicles Progress Examined

At Flagship One, we’re always busy staying on top of developments to better serve our customers, and one thing we’ve been following with particular interest is the trend towards electric vehicles.  For all their highfalutin hi-tech, however, these cars actually go waaaayy back to the very beginnings of automotive history!  So it’s literally an old concept made possible again thanks to new technology.  Talk about Back to the Future!

Though working designs have been recorded as early as 1828, it really wasn’t until the late nineteenth century that practical models appeared on the scene.  They only enjoyed a heyday of about two decades, however, before ceding the market to faster and farther-ranging gasoline vehicles.  Electric ones were then confined to the odd specific use-case, such as with warehouse forklifts and local neighborhood postal vans (plus the occasional moon landing: the only vehicles on the lunar surface are electric ones [!] — all left there by the United States, the former Soviet Union, and China).

Thankfully, today’s electric engines are much improved over their forbears; so much so that they rival and in many aspects simply beat the typical gas-based counterpart.  Given their novelty and, more critically, the relative difficulty manufacturing them, including not yet having the necessary economies of scale, prices remain high, both in terms of upfront purchase costs as well as ongoing operating expenses.

Still, the outlook is fast improving, what with the recent announcement by industry leader Tesla Motors of two new mid-priced designs, one of which will soon begin mass production.  Other automakers have since followed suit, declaring their intentions to also market all-electric models, especially crucial long-range varieties.  Steady Eddy does it…while market adoption has been slow, major automakers no longer doubt the strategic necessity of getting on the electric bandwagon — huzzah!!

Quieter, cheaper to operate, and now thanks to Tesla pushing the envelope just as fast and far-ranging as any set of wheels on the roads, electric vehicles are now finally coming into their own as viable alternatives to traditional gas-guzzlers.  Quiet and environmentally friendly, today’s EVs are becoming ever more practical and affordable, with tomorrow’s offerings only sure to improve on an already exciting situation.  What do you think?  Give us a call or write us and let’s compare notes!
