Your car has encountered some issues, and the diagnostics indicate that you need to replace the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). To determine which part to order, you decide to inspect your engine computer. However, you notice several numbers on the auto computer, making it difficult to identify the correct one. Ordering the wrong part can result in wasted time and money. Don’t worry, though! We will guide you in locating the precise part number for your Mazda PCM ECM ECU. Typically, Mazda engine computers feature multiple numbers, as depicted on the left side.

To find the correct part number for your Mazda PCM ECM ECU, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the label on your engine computer – The label contains essential information about your auto computer, including the part number.
  2. Identify the Part Number – Look for a combination of letters and numbers that make up the part number. Typically, it is located on top of or next to the barcode.
  3. Take note of the part number – Once you have found the part number, take note of it and double-check to ensure its accuracy.
  4. Check for any additional numbers – In some cases, there may be multiple numbers on the engine computer label. Make sure to cross-check with your original part number and confirm if they match.
  5. Consult with a professional – If you are still unsure about the correct part number, it is always best to consult with an expert or bring your car to a trusted mechanic. They will be able to provide you with accurate information and guide you in choosing the right replacement part.

Which Number?

Mazda PCMs typically have a sticker along with the printed numbers on the casing. The sticker contains various numbers, but the 4-digit number is not relevant for these modules. What matters more is the number below it, which includes “12A650.” This specific number identifies a set of these types of computers. In this case, it is “6M81-12A650-DH.”

For Mazda PCMs, the correct part number always includes “18 881” or “18-881” in some form. The first four digits of that number are also located near the top as a four-digit code, making it easier to match PCMs. In this case, the four-digit code for our Mazda PCM is “L3R3,” and the Mazda PCM part number is “L3R3 18 881F.”

Another type of Mazda PCM will have this number on stickers instead. It will still have a 4 digit code and the part number in the same formation as well. The part number is now “KL55 18 881C”, as seen above. Another confusing situation can be seen when the Mazda PCM interchanges with a Ford.

Ford Sticker

Some PCMs have this type of sticker that is normally associated with Ford PCMs. If there is no number with any form of “18881”, then it’ll be a standard Ford 12A650 number for the main Part Number. In this case, it has that “18881” so it is essentially a Mazda/Ford Part and the actual part number is “FS8D-18881-B”. Always remember to check for “18881”, “18 881”, or “18-881” in the number.
